THE INDIGENOUS INTERPRETERS OF SAN FRANCISCO

Asociacion Mayab began this program to address an increasing
need for indigenous language interpretation services in medical
centers and judicial courts in California.  This course is the first
phase of what we hope will grow into a program that can facilitate
access for members of our community to medical and legal services
through the assistance of interpreters in courts and medical visits.
Naomi Adelson, a certified interpreter for the Superior Court of
California, designed, coordinated, and taught the course in
collaboration with Dr. Vanessa Litman of the Mission Centro de
Salud and Marianne Teleki of the Lion Bridge Company.  Six
members from the Maya communities of San Francisco graduated in
November 2008.  The project was financed in part by the Office of
Minority Health, Region IX.  Among the languages of those who
received their certification include:

  • Mam from Guatemala
  • Tzeltal from Chiapas
  • Chol from Chiapas
  • Yucatec Maya

If you or someone you know is in need of interpretation services in
any of these languages, contact us at [email protected]
or call us at (415) 556 9800, for more information.
