Summer Maya Language and Culture Program

Asociacion Mayab, with support from the Seventh Generation Fund,
began a Maya language and culture program for Maya children and
adolescents in San Francisco.  The program aims to teach the
basic elements of the language of our ancestors to the young
people of our community in the United States, as well as elements
of our culture and history. The program took place during the
spring of 2009 and included games, classes, and other activities
like drawing and lectures, to facilitate the learning of Maya
language and culture.  The course is taught by instructors Ismael
Chel, Daniel Espinosa Jr., and Angel Briceño.
The Maya Language Class in San Rafael

In August of 2008 Asociacion Mayab successfully concluded its
Summer Maya Language Course in the city of San Rafael.  This
course was made possible thanks to the generous support of the
Grassroots Leadership Network of Marin and the Pickleweed
Community Center.  The course attracted entire families and gave
parents the opportunity to transmit the legacy of our indigenous
language to their children.

MAYA LANGUAGE CLASS

Our Maya language class is a project intended to preserve the
Yucatec Maya language, one of the most important elements of our
culture.

In 2012, anthropologist and Maya writer Ana Patricia Martinez
Huchim will visit Asociacion Mayab. Professor Martinez-Huchim is
the founder and director of Maximo Huchim Cultural Center in her
native Tizimin, Yucatan. She has taught Maya language to kids and
adults in Yucatan for more than 10 years. She will teach our next
summer program for adults and kids in 2012. The class is
scheduled to start in the first week of July, please stay tuned for
updates on specific days and times when classes will take place.

Our organization also provides consultation to universities and
investigators interested in learning more about our language.  In
the past, our organization has collaborated with the University of
Stanford, the University of Rochester, and UC Berkeley in order to
support Maya language classes and linguistic investigations.

Additionally, our classes have participated in a Yucatec Maya
language teleconference-course with the Department of Latin
American and Caribbean studies at the University of Wisconsin,
Madison.
